Bible reading that helps spiritual growth
Why is it so important to train believers to read the Bible themselves? How does Bible reading help spiritual growth?
1. Bible reading helps us to know the Triune God. Pastor Stoddard of England, who served God for over 53 years, pointed out in his last public sermon in July 2007 that the most important thing for believers to do is to be like Christ. How can we become more like Him? We must first know Him. How can we know Him? Through reading the Bible.
2. Reading the Bible helps us increase our faith in God. The Bible's protagonist is God; it records God's attributes and His works. The more we read the Bible, the more we come to know God. Mr. Muller, who ran an orphanage in England, had great faith in God. Why could he remain steadfast in his faith despite any difficulties? He came to know God's credibility through reading the Bible. He read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation 155 times; his understanding of God deepened, and his faith increased continuously.
3. Bible reading helps us live in God's love. Jude 21 states that believers should keep themselves in God's love; verses 20 and 21 below explain how to achieve this goal in three clauses. The first is to edify ourselves in the most holy truth, experiencing and bearing God's love through obeying the teachings of the Bible. Those who do not understand or practice the truth are alienated from Him and find it difficult to feel His love.
4. Bible reading helps us reduce sin. As the psalmist prayed, he asked and answered himself: "How can a young man purify his ways? By obeying your word." Why does obeying God's word help one overcome temptation? Because His word is beneficial to us, letting us know what is wrong (rebuke, 2 Timothy 3:16) and how to return to the right path (convert), 2 Timothy 3:16. When we reduce sin, we naturally draw closer to God, and our spiritual life grows.
The four aspects mentioned above are only a part of what the Bible is good for us. For example, 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
Besides rebuking and correcting people to benefit readers, the Bible also helps people in teaching (referring to doctrine) and instructing them in righteousness (helping people to be constantly trained). Its purpose is to make God's people complete and fully prepared to do all kinds of good works, which is what believers should do.
